My Legacy

After my death, my warning that France would not wait long before they had established a pure republic came into effect and the Bourbon Dynasty finally came to an end.

French Revolution

During the French Revolution, I rose in the ranks of both the government and the military. I was the commandant-general of the National Guard and Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies. Before the Revolution, I worked to establish a constitutional monarchy. I tried to prevent revolution from the monarchy but the troops I lead to turn on the Parisian Mob disobeyed my orders. Then, I was viewed as a traitor and I fled the country only to be arrested in Austria and imprisoned for about four years. After my release, I worked towards the removal of Napoleon Bonaparte from power. In the Revolution, I focused on dethroning Bourbon Kings. I was a member of the French Carbonari which helped in organizing an overthrow of Bourbon kings and I later supported the establishment of Louis-Phillipe as constitutional monarch fully believing he would support the principles I had been strongly fighting for. I began losing popularity with the French people once again and resigned as commandment-general in 1830. I later realized that Louis-Phillipe I was insincere in his beliefs that I thought were similar to my own. Instead of being executed like I was supposed to be, I died in May of 1834 of pneumonia.

Role in American Revolution

In 1777, I bought my own ship and headed to America to support the colonists in the revolution against the British. I joined as a major general working with George Washington with whom I became lifelong friend. In my opinion, I served well. I lead American forces to several victories. When I returned the France in 1779, I persuaded the French to send aid to the American forces. After the British surrendered, I returned home to Paris. I was viewed as a hero to this new nation and I carried the beliefs I developed during this time throughout my life.

About Me

My name is Marie-Joseph-Paul-Yves-Roch-Gilbert du Motier. However, I prefer to be called simply, Marquis de Lafayette. I was born on 7 Septembre 1757 at Chateau de Chavaniac in France. My father died while fighting in the Seven Years War when I was about two years old. However, I do not remember a lot about that. My mother and grandfather died when I was twelve years old, leaving a rather large fortune. It was in my blood to fight for what I believed in; I followed many generations of soldiers. Therefore, I enrolled in the military academy at Versailles. I became a military captain at the age of sixteen, the same year I married Marie Adrienne Francoise de Noailles (She's related to the king) and, I became a military captain when I was sixteen. I played a leading role in the period leading up to the French Revolution. I supported the removal of Bourbon kings and the establishment of a republic in France.
